Entry flight days for Main Event come to a close, as game progresses, increasing the suspense filled exhilaration for the coming finale! Every player worth their salt has eyes only on the top win and the Main Event till now has witnessed an amazing lot of determination, grit and fortitude. Day 2AB is now in books and the remaining players will be merged with the Day 2C survivors to resume Day 3 play on Thursday.

Today, we cover the happenings of Day 2AB, where the segregated fields of Day 1A and Day 2B played simultaneously in the Amazon Room and Brasilia and Pavillion Rooms respectively.

Day 1A had an entry field of 771 players, out of which only 500 remained to continue. Swede Martin Jacobson was chip leader on this day, with his lot of 200,100. A record number of 2144 players joined in on Day 1B, though only half of these, about 1,300 remained. Unknown element, Trey Luxemberger took over the chip lead with 193,450 chips. 3,768 more joined in on Day 1C, taking the sum total of Main Event entries to 6,683, with USA’s Eric Tracy leading with 206,175 chips.

PokerGuru has mentioned about our very own Indian warriors holding forth in the play. Among the Indian players from Day 2AB, the sole survivor to make Day 3 was Apoorva Goel, who ended the day with a stack of 33,000 chips. Goel was going strong with a healthy stack but eventually lost out on a huge pot late in the day. Unfortunately, fellow Indians Shashank Jain, Sahil Agarwal and Samay Parikh, were unable to survive and will have to wait it out, until next year.

Meanwhile the other half of our Indian contingent, Aditya Agarwal (53,050), Jasven Saigal (53,000), Akash Malik (43,000) and Aditya Sushant (45,000) are still in the fray and will resume play on Day 2C tonight (12 pm Vegas time tomorrow).

Approximately 822 players, less than half of the starting field survived on Day 2AB, with Tim Stansifer leading the chip stacks with his 481,500. Rounding off the top three stacks of the day was Tom Cannulli with 407,800 and Joe Kuether at third-place with 401,200 chips in the bag. Kuether has 24 WSOP cashes and 24th place in the 2012 WSOP Europe Main Event, is yet to bag his first gold in the Main. He moved in to the leader line, mid way through the day and refused to relinquish his lead after that.

The second day will be long remembered by players for its unforgettable experience. Survivors, who had been segregated, went on to play in different rooms. Day 1A survivors had the Amazon Room for the next play, while those from Day 1B took to the Brasilia and Pavilion rooms.

The play was almost like an elimination round, before the final call, during the last stage of the day. Many fell off and these included 2012 WSOP Main Event champion Greg Merson 2012 WSOP, November Niner Michiel Brummelhuis, Brandon Shack-Harris and George Danzer, Josh Arieh, Mike Sexton, Dennis Phillips, Yevgeniy Timoshenko. Among the ladies to exit were Amanda Musumeci, Vanessa Selbst, and Annette Obrestad.

Players were busy piling up chip counts and among those who punched their ticket to Day 3 include Martin Jacobson, the Day 1A chip leader, who managed to remain in the top ten. Other notables names still in contention are Antonio Esfandiari (277,800), Abe Mosseri (260,500), Eric Cloutier (236,000), 2003 WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker (222,000), Faraz Jaka (195,000), Ole Schemion (180,900), Marvin Rettenmaier (173,200), Erik Seidel (130,600), Allen Cunningham (114,400), 1996 WSOP Main Event champion Huck Seed (96,500), and reigning champion Ryan Riess (84,900).

Some noteworthy moments of the day-

– Actors, Kevin Pollak and his “Parenthood” star friend, Ray Romano were both sparring for the third year in a row, with Pollak, leading as always. Will Pollak better his record, after 2012’s 134th place finish, is the question!

Artur Koren took his seat in the Day 2A field, nearly seven hours after the scheduled start time of 12pm. Artur was derailed on the trip to Rio, by a trip to the hospital, after falling off his skateboard. Nevertheless, he was sitting tight with 60,000 chips at the end of the day.

– Eight-time bracelet winner Erik Seidel and Johnny Chan are busy chalking up chip counts, high up among the elite in the field on Day 2AB, while Hall of Famer Mike Sexton had to exit.
