“Sunday Mmmillion” As Mustapha “lasagnaammm” Kanit Wins For $177,229, Elgstrom Ships FTOPS Main Event

Mustapha “lasagnaammm” Kanit just won last week’s Sunday Million for the top prize of $177,229.79. The Austrian player beat a 5,717 entry-field that created a prize pool of $1,143,400.00. PokerStars has decided to rename the iconic Sunday event as the “Sunday Mmmillion” for a day in honour of the cheerful player. Kanit’s broken English and constant flow of jokes had players in splits, even as he beat them to take the title. On a heater of a lifetime, the past year, he has collected the SCOOP Main Event title, the EPT Grand Final High Roller, the EPT Barcelona High Roller and just a month back the EPT Dublin High Roller. Proof of Kanit’s popularity came at Dublin, where after winning the title, he had top pros lining up to take pics with him.

The other big winner, Denmark’s Christian ‘CMoosepower’ Elgstrom won the FTOPS Main Event for $63,472. This could well be the last independent event as Full Tilt soon merges with PokerStars. Elgstrøm fought for over 13 hours, defeating Spain’s Jonathan “dante-sp” Concepción heads-up. His last big win was at the PokerStars ‘$1,050 Super Tuesday, $300K GTD’ for $74,868, after a five-way deal.

Legal Developments in Russia & Netherlands

Two opposing legal developments took place last week. Reports state that Russia is looking at legalizing online poker to replenish its depleting coffers with tax revenues. The country had banned the sport in 2009, but with statistics showing that 20% of Russia`s adult population plays the game, the government is waking up to the missing revenues.

On the other hand, the Dutch higher Court recently ruled that the game is not one of skill, but rather, a game of chance. The ruling was in a decade-old case that had won the argument in the lower courts.
