Online giant PokerStars is truly betting big on its latest offering 'Power Up' which was being tested since February this year and was only available for play money games. While the play money versions were available to all PokerStars players already, PokerStars recently announced that Power Up is now available for real money games on the .EU client and will hit the .com and .UK clients very soon at stakes of $1, $3, $7 and $15.

PokerStars has always been at the forefront of innovation and after game changing variants like Zoom, Spin & Go, Spin & Go Max introduced by the online giant in recent years, Power Up is certainly different and offers an interesting twist to a game we all love.

Director of Poker Innovation and Operations Severin Rasset expressed the company's excitement on the game’s release and said, "Since the game's inception, we've been eagerly anticipating this moment and it's finally here. The team has worked incredibly hard to produce a brand-new game which, by utilizing our custom engine, delivers incredible mechanics and an engaging universe. We are immensely proud of this major innovation to poker and we hope our players love it as much as we do."

CEO Rafi Ashkenazi also echoed the same sentiments when he said, “We’ve been encouraged by the reaction during alpha testing in July and August and are optimistic that PokerStars Power Up will introduce poker to a new generation of mobile gamers, excite current players and help reconnect with less active or former players.

What is Power Up?

Power Up looks like a typical Hold’em game and is played in a three-handed Sit & Go format where the winner takes all. A player is dealt with two hole cards and in addition they receive three "powers". Players need to buy these power ups with energy points, and gain energy points by playing hands.

Each power is different and no two players can ever possess two of the same powers unless the clone power is deployed. After playing a power card, the player gets a new power when the hand finishes, so each player always starts each hand with three powers.

A player also starts a Power Up tournament with an energy level of 10. It's this energy that allows the use of power cards during a game. The player receives two more energy points at the start of each hand (up to a maximum of 15).

What are the Power Up powers?

There are nine powers in Power Up announced till now, each with unique features and requiring different levels of energy to be used. PokerStars promises that many more powers will be gradually introduced. Here are the nine powers and what they do -

X-Ray

This power allows a player to see through their opponent’s one hole card. The card forces the opponent to expose one of their hole cards.

Upgrade

This power allows the player to draw a third card, and then discard the one no longer needed.

Scanner

This card allows a player to view the top two cards in the deck and choose whether to discard one of them. The opponents will know if a card is discarded, but not which card it was.

Reload

Like the upgrade power card, this power card allows you to change one or both of the cards you're dealt at the start of the hand.

Intel

This card allows a player to get vital intelligence and an advantage over your opponents by allowing the player to view the deck's top card for the rest of the hand.

Engineer

This card allows the player to choose the deck's next card from three options. All players can see them, but only the player who opts for the card can choose (while the other two options are discarded).

EMP

To prevent your opponent from playing a card on a street that a player wants to protect, the EMP will protect that card, and prevent opponents from playing powers on that street.

Disintegrate

This power allows a player to remove the card dealt on the current street (one of three cards if used on the flop).

Clone

This card enables you to receive a copy of the last power played in the hand.

How to use power cards?

1. First, click on the power up card to activate it and make sure enough energy is there to use it as each card consumes from the energy balance (shown at the top of each power card).

2. Now target a card, but only those dealt on the current betting round.

There's only one way to protect the cards already dealt and that's to move all in. Shove and the cards already dealt will be protected from further powers and highlighted in red.

After the conclusion of each hand the power cards are topped up, ready for the next hand.
