Next up, we report how GPI’s annual American Poker Awards are set to make a comeback on February 22 at L.A.’s Andaz West Hollywood. The confirmed award winners include the top male and top female player awards won by Adrian Mateos and Kristen Bicknell respectively while Bryn Kenney will collect the American Player of the Year award.

We conclude this edition by reporting on Upswing Poker’s sole PLO coach Fernando "JNandez87" Habbeger who is exercising the option in his contract to quit the company to start his own training site.

PokerStars TCOOP Rebranded As Turbo Series

Online giant PokerStars is back in news as the company has now decided to rebrand its popular Turbo Championship of Online Poker (TCOOP) series after a six-year history as the “Turbo Series” and has even pushed back the schedule from January to February. While the complete schedule hasn’t been released yet, the tentative dates for the series is February 18 - March 4.

PokerStars also announced the special anniversary editions of the Sunday Million and Sunday Storm to be hosted on February 4, which guarantee $10 million and $1 million respectively.

PokerStars has tweaked its tournament series schedule keeping in mind that a lot of other online poker sites are hosting their own MTT series in the same late-January time slot.

In order to do that, first, PokerStars launched the $25 million guaranteed Winter Series that successfully ran from December 25 - January 7 and now, they have finally announced a late-February Turbo Series that will run during some less-crowded weeks.

GPI’s American Poker Awards Returns on February 22

It's that time once again when Global Poker Index (GPI) will hand out the American Poker Awards (AMA) as the popular ceremony returns for the fourth time.

The awards ceremony for this year is scheduled for February 22 at 7 p.m. with one major change of venue. Instead of the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, the event will now be hosted at LA’s Andaz West Hollywood. According to the press release, there will be over a dozen" awards, with PokerStars again serving as the title sponsor.

AMA President Alexandre Dreyfus was stoked about the return and stated, "We are very excited to return to the Los Angeles area for a fourth straight year to reward the most deserving poker players, industry leaders and media members in the business

The award categories and nominees have not been announced yet. In the past, award categories did change a bit each year and some constant categories have been the Industry Person of the Year, Media Person of the Year, Tournament Performance of the Year and Breakout Performance of the Year.

The top male and top female player on the GPI's points ranking system, along with the American Player of the Year winners have already confirmed. Spanish phenom Adrian Mateos and Kristen Bicknell will take home the top honors in the male and female category. Bryn Kenney will collect the American Player of the Year.

Fernando "JNandez87" Habbeger Quits Upswing Poker as PLO Coach

Less than a year after signing as PLO coach for training site Upswing Poker with Doug Polk & Ryan Fees, the sole PLO coach Fernando "JNandez87" Habbeger has exercised an option in his contract to quit the company to start his own training site. Habbeger was barely three months into an apparent 18-month commitment to teach the Upswing’s "PLO Lab"

Fernando Habegger

As Habbeger was Upswing's sole PLO coach, the company have been left very much high and dry and according to a 2+2 post from Polk, "he plans to steal our customers and use that to begin his own site."

After the departure topic started trending, Habbeger uploaded a YouTube video explaining his decision.

Habbegersaid that he faced two problems; first, that he was finding it hard to successfully pitch new ideas to Upswing which he and his team had come up with, and second, he said the remuneration fixed was fine for one man but now a team was working which was not sustainable.

At the end, Habbeger concluded by saying that he would be producing another three months of cutting-edge content for Upswing before his departure and a month thereafter, he would be starting again with his team at JNandez Poker.

Polk on the other hand was furious over the development as Upswing had sold six-month and year long subscriptions to the PLO Lab on the back of an agreed 18 month commitment from Fernando, and that now those customers would be let down. Polk quoted, "Fernando apparently does not find it important enough to take care of the people who have paid for training, and for him to fulfill his obligations. I have lost a lot of respect for JNandez. This is not how you are supposed to conduct business when people put faith in you by paying you money for a service."

Polk admitted that he had no idea that the contract included a clause which allowed either party to cancel after 90 days. For now, the customers who bought the product have been told they will receive pro-rata compensation for the length of time remaining on their subscriptions.
