In California, running almost in tandem to the PokerStars Championship Panama, was the World Poker Tour (WPT) Rolling Thunder, which saw Michael Del Vecchio (cover image) taking down the $3,500 Main Event for $284,638.

Hosted at the Thunder Valley Resort Casino, the Main Event registered 421 entries including some global pros. Vecchio fought a stacked final table hat had notables such as Sorel Mizzi Olivier Busquet and Connor Drinan to claim his first six-figure payday, almost double his earlier earnings combined.

Final Table Recap

Vecchio grabbed the chip lead on Day 4 and mostly played under the radar until the final table was underway.

Drinan was the first to exit at sixth place, busted by Busquet. It took two and a half hours, but the end came upon Busquet who was railed by Steve Tabb at fifth place. Pre-flop Busquet moved all in with his ace-eight suited and Tabb with king-four suited called only to get a flush on the board.

By this time Vechhio was down on the chip counts, but four hands later an encounter with John Hadley got him back on keel. Vecchio’s pocket sixes took the pot off Hadley’s ace-queen and the latter was out at fourth place.

Tabb had the lead and managed to sustain it another three hours, finally exiting at third place, but with the consolation of the first six-figure payout of $122,296 at the event.

After busting Tabb, Vechhio faced Mizzi at heads up with a 2 to 1 chip advantage. But, Mizzi was in no mood to let go and put up a valiant fight, even wresting away the chip lead.

It took an hour for the final hand to arrive. The board revealed giving Vecchio trips with his , Mizzi had an open-ended straight-flush draw with his and made the call. The river with however was useless for him and the tournament ended with Vecchio taking the title. Mizzi made a second-place finish for $190,105.

Vecchio not only got his first WPT title, but also a seat worth $15,000 into the WPT Tournament of Champions set for the season-end on April 7 in Hollywood.
