Macau Poker Cup 27: Jiwei Deng Wins Record-Breaking Baby Dragon; Atul Nandi, Anujkumar Kodam, Nishant Sharma & Dhaval Mudgal Score

The record-breaking Macau Poker Cup (MPC) HK$8,000 Baby Dragon attracted a massive field of 793 runners creating a whopping HK$5,528,312 prize pool. China’s Jiwei Deng (cover image) defeated fellow countryman Xiangling He in the heads-up battle after a deal to chop was agreed upon, to claim the title and HK$942,000 in prize money. The event paid out the top 99 players.

A total of 124 survivors returned for Day 2 action and within no time the eliminations started with the money bubble bursting in just 90-minutes. China’s Wang Hui was the unlucky player who missed out at 100th place.

Several notables cruised through to make the money but missed the final table and these included Asia Player of the Year frontrunner Alan Lau, Team PokerStars Pros Celina Lin and Randy Lew, Dhaval Mudgal and Day 1 chip leader James Lee.

Our Indian challengers once again came to the fore with four out of the five Day 2 contenders making it in the money. Atul Nandi Nagpal finished 34th for HK$24,500, Anujkumar Kodam finished 41st for HK$22,000, Nishant Sharma finished 57th for HK$18,800, while Dhaval Mudgal pocketed HK$17,700 for his 72nd place finish.

Sharma posted his bust out hand on FB – “Busto 57th place A2s<KJo and we got HK$18,800. I’m taking it in PS act.”

It took over eight hours of play to chop down the starting field of 124 survivors to the nine-handed final table. China’s Yang Liu went out at 10th place to setup the final table.

Mike Kuan Hsiang Huang was the first elimination followed by Australian pro Bobby Zhang. Despite making his second Baby Dragon Final Table, the winner of the inaugural Baby Dragon tournament Zhang couldn’t survive further and exited in eighth place.

Jun Li exited the event in seventh place with Fang Xing going out in sixth place.

Taiwan based Chun Hung Chen was the next casualty followed by Singapore based Danny Wee Zhi Tang.

Finally, after Qicheng Du’s elimination, the heads-up duel was set between the two Chinese players – Xiangling He and eventual champion Jiwei Deng

Both players started the heads-up affair almost evenly placed and decided to chop the HK$1,883,000 prize pool and play only for the title and the trophy. Deng sealed an extra HK$1,000 for a HK$942,000 payday while He secured HK$941,000 in prize money for himself.

It did not take long thereafter for Deng to seal the title as his pocket sevens came up ahead of He’s pocket fives in a crucial hand to give the former a commanding chip lead of over 6-1.

The final hand of the event saw all the chips going in the middle on the turn with the board reading . He tabled for a flush draw and a gut shot straight draw while Deng got a flopped pair and nut flush draw with his Both hit their flush on the river and Deng took down the title and approximately US$120,400 in prize money.

This is the 41-year-old full-time husband’s best career score and with this win he has more than doubled his total tournament earnings that stood at a modest US$61,112 before this score.

Post his win, the champion said, “I’m a frequent visitor here, of course I am happy, but still had to work hard!

The spotlight is now on the signature HK$15,000 Red Dragon Main Event that features a massive HK$10M GTD. With the Baby Dragon event witnessing a 33% increase in entries as compared to last year, the MPC tournament staff is expecting another recording-breaking field in the Main Event.

In other news, Day 1 of the HK$50,000 NLH event attracted a total of 150 hopefuls, as compared to 101 entries last year. The total prize pool generated was an impressive HK$6,838,500 with the eventual winner walking away with at least HK$1.7 million!
