Kenneth Wong Triumphs at Asia Championship of Poker Platinum Series IV Main Event

Hong Kong’s Kenneth Wong (cover image) topped the 274-player field, defeating China’s Ziyang Zhao heads-up to capture the championship title at the Asia Championship of Poker Platinum Series IV.

Wong is no stranger to tournament success with a number of good scores under his belt. His biggest career cash came from his runner-up finish at the 2012 Aussie Million Poker Championship where he pocketed $1,029,474 but with this win, Wong got his first title in Asia-Pacific.

The ACOP Platinum Series IV ran a four-day schedule from April 17-20 at the PokerStars Live poker room in Macau. The biggest draw of the series i.e. HK $5,500 ACOP Platinum Main Event, featured a generous HK $500,000 guarantee and the top 31 players were assured a minimum payday of HK $9,200 from the HK $1,233,000 prize pool.

The final hand of the tournament played out at blinds 15K/30K. Action started with Zhao, who raised 65K from the small blind and Wong in the big blind called. Wong checked the flop of and Zhao led out with a bet of 55K. Wong announced all in with and Zhao called for his remaining 350K and tabled . Both players found a pair on the flop but Wong’s seven pair held as the dealer brought the 1c and 5h to complete the board.

“I don’t think it’s hit me. I’ll probably realize I won tomorrow,” said Wong after his victory.

The top 10 players from each Platinum Series Main Event will be entered into the ACOP Platinum Series Playoffs that place online at PokerStars on October 5, 2014. The playoffs will award the winner an ACOP Main Event seat worth HK $100K!

 

Side Event Results:

The opening event of the series, $1,000 Deepstack PLO saw a total of 123 players ponying up the buy-in to generate a prize pool of HKD $107,379. Malaysia’s Daren Yoon came out on top and won HK $27,900 (US $3,598).

The second day of the series, April 18th began with main event satellite events and conducted the scheduled $1,500 Deepstack event. The event garnered 219 players and ran over two days to crown a champion. It was Japan’s Shingo Cho who bested the field to take home HKD $68,800 in prize money.

The last event on the series, the $2,500 KO Bounty saw 127 runners that made for a prize pool of HK $215,582 with an additional HKD $63,500 going out in bounties. China’s Min Yi topped the field to conclude the series and took home $45,500 for her efforts (final two players made a deal for an even chop). Fellow countryman Wei Sun bagged the runner-up title for an equal payout of $45,500.
