The first-ever World Poker Tour (WPT) Uruguay $1,500 Main Event, presented by Brasil Poker Live, attracted a strong field of 410 runners to make for a total prize pool of $535,000 with the top 52 places making it in the money.

Besting them all was Argentina’s Juan Gonzalez (cover image) who displayed an impressive performance to claim the $109,860 first place purse and the title. Gonzalez managed to weave his way from a short-stack all the way to the top by eliminating only one player.

Notables who made money but fell shy of making the final table included Jean Sierra (10th – $9,260), Felipe Sangalli Pasini (12th – $9,260), Alejandro Lopez (13th – $7,715), Ezequiel Waigel (14th – $7,715), Martín Vega (18th – $6,335), Jose “Nacho” Barbero (29th – $3,005), and Matias Scaffo (45th – $2,685).

Final Table Recap

The first elimination of the six-handed final table was the short stacked Laura Moreno. She moved allin with card 3card 2 and got the call from Brian Kaufman who tabled card 1card 3. The board ran card 3card 3card 1card 3card 2 and Moreno exited the event in sixth place.

The next elimination came soon thereafter in Morio Bonanata who went out at the hands of Kaue Vinicius De Souza. De Souza opened, Miguel Brañas called and Bonanata shoved with card 3card 1. De Souza called with a better card 2card 3 while Brañas folded. The board ran card 1card 1card 3card 1card 2 and that was the end of Bonanata’s tournament run.

De Souza continued putting pressure and this time knocked out Brian Kaufman. De Souza open shoved card 3card 3 and Kaufman called tabling card 3card 3. Kaufman couldn't find a pair and exited in fourth place.

The next elimination came after a few hours and this time Gonzalez emerged to eliminate Miguel Brañas. Brañas open-shoved with card 3card 3 and Gonzalez called tabling card 2card 2 and found luck on the board card 3card 3card 1card 3card 1 to eliminate Brañas in third place.

The heads-up between Gonzalez and De Souza then commenced with the former holding a 2:1 chip lead and it just took four hands for Gonzalez to secure the title.

The final hand was a cooler situation; action started with Gonzalez opening and De Souza 3-bet. Gonzalez immediately shoved holding card 1card 3 and De Souza called off tabling card 3card 2. With no help on the board, Desouza settled for the runner-up spot while Gonzalez was crowned champion!
