The month of August has all of India celebrating freedom gained from our British overlords back in 1947. Poker fans too have much to celebrate during this 69th year of our Independence with the India Poker Championship (IPC) announcing the schedule of its 4th edition of the year. The next edition of the IPC will take place from August 11-16 at the Deltin Royale Poker Room in Panjim, Goa.

Right off the bat, you will notice as compared to earlier editions, there is one extra day that has been added to the event schedule. While most of the schedule is similar to past events, the new changes in the schedule include a High Roller event that has been added for the first time at the IPC. The rest of the schedule remains the same, but Sunday night’s Knockout event now gets a twist with the Greed format being incorporated into it, which we will come to a bit later.

The last edition of the IPC took place from June 3-7 and had very healthy turnouts, although not record setting numbers of the January or April editions. Still 200 seems to be the new standard for the smaller buy-in events and so it was in IPC June as well, where Vidwath Shetty overcame a field of 229 runners to take home the title at the IPC 5K Warm Up tournament. The following night saw Divyesh Shah taking down the 10K Kickoff title outlasting 207 players. Young Karan Khushalani, a native of Chhattisgarh was the big winner of the weekend taking down the 30K Big Game (Main Event) emerging victorious from 164 participants. The series ended with the 10K Super Knockout Deepstack turbo tournament, which was won by Rajesh Rajpopat who defeated 140 players to remain last man standing.

The Independence Day week is expected to be a big one at Deltin Royale and therefore the IPC as plenty of visitors are expected to come into Goa to take advantage of the long weekend. It is perhaps with this in mind that the IPC decided to extend its schedule a little bit to accommodate a 6-event schedule.

“There have been plenty of player requests for a Highroller event to be included as part of the schedule. Considering the kind of terrific turnouts we’ve got in all the events this year, we believe there is truly a resurgence of live poker in the country. So it’s a good time to expand the schedule and add additional events into the mix. Our goal eventually is to have a tournament schedule which is at least 10 days in duration mirroring similar schedules in the Asian region”, said IPC co-Director Peter Abraham on the new schedule of events.

“I am particularly excited about the Greed format which we will be introducing at the IPC for the very first time. It’s an interesting format, which as the name suggests is all about being greedy and grabbing as much of the prize pool as possible. Add to that the bounty element and I believe this will be an absolutely fun event which all the players should enjoy!” said co-Director Rajeev Kanjani.

For those who are unaware, the Greed tournament does not operate the way traditional events do, in terms of payout. Once the tournament is down to about 10% of the field remaining, players will be asked to vote if they wish to evenly chop the prize pool. If all votes are positive, the tournament stops immediately and the players gets paid out equally. Even a single negative vote means that the tournament goes on till the next elimination, where this process is repeated again.

Aside from the above new events, the rest of the schedule follows a similar pattern as past editions. Tuesday, 11 August will see the 6K Mega Satellite where players can play to win a package for the side events (excluding the 60K Highroller) of the IPC series.

The 5K Warm Up will take place on 12th August which will be followed by the 10K Kickoff on 13th August. Friday evening i.e. 14th August will see the 60K Highroller tournament take place and the 2 day 30K Big Game (Main Event) will take place on 15-16 August. The series will close on Sunday night with the 8K Greed Knockout tournament. There are guarantees in place for all events from 11-15 August and the details of those guarantees, timings and buy-ins are provided in the quick reference schedule given below.
