As the fight for the elections heats up, political parties are upping the war against Goa casinos, in a bid to woo voters. The opposition Congress party has now released its manifesto that clearly states it will permanently shut down casinos, if voted to power. Additionally, the party has denounced all onshore casinos, as nothing but ‘slot machines’ and in retaliation the incumbent BJP has accused the Congress of making false promises.

Congress Manifesto Promises ‘No Casinos’

The Congress manifesto was released on Monday and Luizinho Faleiro, Goa Congress Chief told the press, “Floating casinos in Goa’s river will be closed permanently - those on the shore too will be closed at a later stage.”

Faleiro explained that offshore casinos in the River Mandovi would be shut during the first phase, while onshore casinos would follow suit in the second phase. On being asked if the shutdown would affect employment, Faleiro negated the statement and said, “I don’t think that there are much Goans working at these casinos.”

According to experts, figures of locals working at casinos is anywhere between 5000 and 10,000.

Reacting to the statement, Vijay Tendulkar, BJP claimed that the Congress was making false promises and said, “Congress through its manifesto is giving false assurances. They were behind getting casinos to Goa.”

All Onshore Casinos Just ‘Slot Machines’

Taking the argument further, a day later, Pratapsingh Rane, Goa Congress Head accused all onshore casinos of being just ‘slot machines’. Rane claimed "There are no onshore casinos. There are only slot machines. They are called one-armed bandits. Not table games."

The pre-election fight has just begun and casinos seem to have become the favorite whipping boy for all parties in the fray, with even the latest to enter Goa, Aam Aadmi party (AAP) having earlier launched a signature campaign to shut them down.
