It was a remarkable day for players from India at the Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino in Cebu (Philippines). Overnight chip leader and PokerGuru Team Pro Amit Varma continued his dominance at the PHP 100,000 buy-in APPT Main Event tournament. Day 3 ended once the final table was reached with 9 players remaining and the PokerGuru Team Pro is looking strong to win the event with a chip lead of 1,240,000. Close on Varma’s heel was fellow Indian Sameer Rattonsey, who ended the day in second position with a chip count of 908,000. The two Indians held around 46 per cent of the total chips in play.

APPT has been an eventful series for Team India as in a side event, another player from the team – Amit Jain raked in PHP 543,200 when he finished runners-up in the PHP 30K Knock Out Bounty tournament!

Earlier at the main event, in a hand that burst the bubble for the final table, Varma’s cracked Bobby Zhang’s to bust the Australian out of the tournament. Zhang called a pre-flop raise by Varma to see the flop – Varma bet 37,000 in continuation thinking his top pair was good, but an all-in raise of 132,000 from Zhang made the Indian tank for a while. After a minute or two, Varma decided to call Zhang’s bet saying that he figured he was behind. Right he was, when Zhang flipped open his red bullets. But a wonder card of on the turn and a harmless crushed the Australian’s hope to make it to the final table.

In the meantime, Sameer Rattonsey who ended Day 2 in 11th position with 191,000, closed in on the gap between him and Varma on the penultimate day with some solid play. In the first notable hand which involved Rattonsey, a short-stacked Bobo Chen shoved in pre-flop with about 60,000 chips to show . Rattonsey who held was the only caller. The flop opened up options for Chen, but a turn of and river sent the Chinese out of the tournament. In another big hand which gave Sameer his big break, Rattonsey woke up to bullets in the hole and shoved from small blind for 250,000. He conveniently doubled up by Sungsik Bae who called with 9x 8x from big blind, with nothing to show on the board.
