It`s busy season in Asia with not one but two major stops currently underway. While the APPT Macau 2018 is on its last few events, the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Philippines Championships 2018 is fresh off the gates. The series got underway on Wednesday at the Resorts World Manila and the 19-event series will run through till April 2. Headlining the schedule is the ₱55,000 Main Event (March 24-28) that features an impressive ₱8 Million guaranteed prize pool.

One of the better value tournaments around, APT has steadily built a sizeable fan base largely due to its affordable buy-in structure and excellent player experience. A regular stop for many Indians, this edition too has tournament regular Jaydeep Dawer in attendance. The Surat-based pro is off to a steady start in the series with a final table finish in the APT-RWM₱2 Million GTD Opening Event. Dawer was the start-of-day chip leader on the final day and eventually finished sixth for ₱95,100 (~₹1.18 Lakhs). Singapore’s John Low Zi Cheng emerged as the champion taking down the opening event for ₱485,100.

In other side events, Joven Huerto took down the Ante Up for Charity event for ₱54,700.

APT-RWM 2 Million GTD Opening Event

The Opening Event drew a field of 280 entries that helped create a ₱2,716,000 prize pool. 82 players returned back on the final day with all eyes on the ₱485,100 top prize money along with the first title of the series.

After 12 hours of grueling poker action, Singapore’s John Low Zi Cheng was the last player standing but the going wasn`t easy as he had to endure a roller coaster heads-up battle against Filipino Bernard Chua. Cheng eventually prevailed and took down the event in style by winning the final hand with a royal flush.

While we have a couple of Indians doing the country proud in Macau, Jaydeep Dawer kept the flag flying high in Manila by getting straight to work with a final table finish in the opening event. Dawer came into Day 2 leading the 82 survivors and eventually finished sixth collecting ₱95,100 (~₹1.18 Lakhs) for his efforts.

Notables who managed to run deep but couldn’t reach the final tables included Yohwan Lim (22nd place), Meneleo Gloria (28th place), Jeon Seung Soo (36th place), Anacleto Quijano (40th place), and Kim Seung Yeolin (41st place).

The unofficial final table of 10 players saw the quick fall of local players Jessie Leonarez and Algerio Tabacon in tenth and ninth place respectively.

Final Table Recap

After the fall of Richard Marquez (8th place), John Clyde Tan followed suit in seventh place after losing all his chips to the eventual champion Cheng.

The start-of-day chip leader and sole Indian challenger on the final table, Jaydeep Dawer went out next in sixth place. Dawer got eliminated in a three-way all-in pot that saw Yasuaki Nakayama winning the big pot for a crucial double up through Cheng.

Cheng however went on to eliminate Japan’s Yasuaki Nakayama in fifth place and continued to dominate after busting Goh Kok Keong next in fourth place.

The lone female at the final table, Wan Mei Lin bowed out in third place and with that, the wild and swingy heads up round between Cheng and Bernard Chua began.

The heads-up battle saw Cheng ahead nearly 6.5:1 at the start but Chua quickly recovered resulting in both players taking turns as chip leader not just once but several times and soon the stacks got even.

The exchange of lead continued until the final hand of the event was dealt. Chua’s were up against Cheng’s and the board declared Cheng the champion.
